Individual Therapy
Therapy is about change. More specifically, it is about changing the way you think about yourself and the world around you, and then modifying your behavior accordingly. I was trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), so I try to highlight clients’ self-defeating thought patterns and connect those patterns to harmful behaviors. An example of a self-defeating thought pattern is perfectionistic thinking (see article on Free Articles Page).
I tailor my approach to suit each client’s specific needs. That means I sometimes use CBT and other times a solution-focused or supportive approach. Whatever therapeutic style I use, my goal is always the same: to educate and empower clients so they may lead richer and healthier emotional lives.
I typically work with clients for about 10 sessions, but sometimes therapy can last longer, depending on the severity and duration of the symptoms. Many of the clients I work with have feelings of depression and anxiety. If medication appears warranted, I will refer clients to a psychiatrist for an evaluation.
I meet with clients once a week, occasionally twice a week if they require more intensive work. I suggest that the client have a goal in mind in order to give the therapy some form and structure. Sometimes the process of therapy can be difficult, particularly if talking about painful events or memories, but the results can often be tremendously rewarding, even life-changing.
